Saraswati Temple

Saraswati temple is one of the famous temples of goddess Saraswati in Andhra Pradesh and India. Gnana Saraswathi temple at Basar is on the banks of river godavari. According to hindu belief goddess Laksmi ( Laxmi) is a symbol of wealth and Goddess Saraswati is a symbol of knowledge, studies and learning. Children from through out Andhra Pradesh are brought to Basar to have aksharabhyasam at the Saraswati temple at Basar. Sri Gnana Saraswathi devasthanam takes care of the administration of Saraswati temple at Basar.

Connectivity to Basar :

Basar is located at a distance of 50 km from Nizamabad town and 50km from Nirmal in Adilabad district. Nizamabad is connected by NH7                ( National High way 7 ) connecting new Delhi and Bangalore. APSRTC (

Andhra Pradesh Road

transport Corporation ) operates buses from Hyderabad, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Nirmal, Vijayawada, Guntur, Kurnool, Medak, Sangareddy and other important places in Andhra pradesh to Basar. APTDC (Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation) is conducting packaged tours to Basar that include darshan at the Saraswati temple and accommodation at Basar. Rajiv Gandhi international airport at Shamshabad near Hyderabad is the nearest airport to reach Basar and an airport is planned at Nizamabad. Basar is connected by rail on the Secunderabad – Nanded railway line and passenger trains and express trains are running from Secunderabad to Nanded.

Story of the Saraswati temple at Basara:

Since maharishi Vyasa stayed and spent most of his time at Basar and hence the name came for Basar. According to Brahmanda purana, Valmiki installed goddess Saraswati Idol at Basar and wrote Ramayana.

Timings of saraswati temple at Basar:

Puja at Saraswati mata temple starts at 4am in the morning and abhishekam is done for an hour. Alankarana, which is decorating Saraswati with saree and followed by aarti is performed at Saraswati temple at Basar. Children begin their studies after performing akshara abhyasam at Saraswati temple in Basar and the children offer slates, note books , pens and pencils to Saraswati maa, the goddess of knowledge at Basar and distribute the pens and pencils to other children accompanied by other pilgrims

Celebrations at saraswati temple in Basar :

Special poojas are performed from vasantha panchami to maha shivaratri for 15 days. For Dasara devi navaratrulu are celebrated for ten days at Saraswati devi temple in Basar. Devotees visiting Basar also perform puja to the Saraswati idol near the hill.

Sri Dattatreya Temple , Sri Vyasa Maharshi Guha,Sri Mahankali Temple Godavari river, Lord Shiva temple at river Godavari bank and Sri Vedavathi Shila. In the sanctum sanctorum the image of Lakshmi stands besides the Goddess Saraswati. Due to the presence of all three goddesses Saraswati, Kali and Lakshmi at Basara, Basara is considered as the divine trinity.

Adilabad District

The district of Adilabad is located between 77.46' and 80.01', of the eastern longitudes and 18.40' and 19.56', of northern latitudes. The Satnala range crosses over the district from the north-west to the south -east. According to the 2001 census the population of the district is 24,79,347. The District consists of 52 Mandals and 1743 villages and 7 Muncipalities. The District is demarcated into 5 divisions Adilabad, Nirmal, Utnoor, Asifabad, Mancherial.

The people of Adilabad are mainly engaged in agriculture. The chief crop grown in the district is Jowar, alongwith paddy, maize, redgram, greengram, blackgram, soyabean, cotton, turmeric, chillies, and coriander. Fruits like mango, banana, and papaya are also grown. Apart from this people are engaged in the cultivation of cashew, onion, brinjal, tomato, and flowers. After agriculture animal husbandry is the second source of income and employment in the district. People are also engaged in sericulture after the implementation of National Sericulture Project from 1989-90

The infrastructure of the district is developing at a rapid pace. It provides medical facilities to its inhabitants through the following hospitals

Adilabad is irrigated through the major rivers like the Godavari, the Penganga, the Pranahita and the Wardha and its tributaries like the Kadam, Peddevagu, Sathanala etc. Power is transmitted to the district through 28 Electrical sub-stations, of 6412 kuts. of high tensions and 10090 kunts of low voltage lines. Nearly 99% of the district has been electrified.
